The Sacred Portrait of the True God with Big Mouth

A drawing to put on a couple of talismans from two wolf shrines and my family's local shrine. The vegetation is based on a collection of beautiful plants in Ura-bandai, Aizu, Fukushima.

Japanese wolves have been believed as mountain gods and guardian of peasants since they were great hunters in mountain forests, and also hunted wild animals such as wild boars and deer, which ruin crops. Even they were already extinct more than 100 years ago, there are still numbers of big and small shrines related to Japanese wolves especially around Kanto area, and giving people their original talismans with one or two wolf figures.

When I visited Hodosan Shrine in Saitama Prefecture and met an old lady who have served for a tea house in top of the mountain for decades, she told me she had encountered a pair of black and white wolves which are she believes "Ohkami-sama" (The Wolf Gods). I do believe they are still living in people's mind today.

幾度となく狼信仰に基づいた絵を描いてきたが、今年の夏に埼玉県長瀞の宝登山神社奥宮を訪ねた際、奥宮のすぐ隣にある茶店に長年お勤めしているというおばあさんから、あるお話を伺った。

曰く、もう何十年も前のことになるけれども、以前白と黒のおおかみさまを見たことがありますよ、私はおおかみさまだと思っているんだけど、とのこと。

どうも現実思考の抜けない私は、とっさに数十年前ならばもうニホンオオカミはいないであろうから、おばあさんが見たのは恐らく野良犬だろう、しかしだとしたら狂犬病が怖いな…などと無粋なことを考えた。しかしおばあさんにお礼を言って奥宮からロープウェイ山頂駅まで山を降りる間、おばあさんがお話し下さったその「おおかみさま」は、たとえオオカミが生きていた頃の目撃証言であろうと、今の目撃談であろうと、実際のニホンオオカミではなく、ニホンオオカミのようなもの、この山の気のような存在、霊験とでも言うべきものなのかもしれないな…などと思い、自分の考えの狭さを反省したのだった。

…ともすると私はものすごいおばあさんとお話できたのかもしれない…！
